Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana
Thursday, September 8, 2005
Dr. Rachael Carinhas-Murphy

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina dramatically changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi and affected millions more throughout the United States and the world. Those of us directly in the path of the storm were devastated and must now face the challenge of rebuilding.

Thanks to the generous outpouring of help from the Salvation Army, my brother Matt Carinhas and our neighbors in the city of Fredericksburg, TX in Gillespie County, (photo below) we were able to establish the St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund to aid in rebuilding our community. Your donations of cash, medications, fuel, food, water, medical supplies, and a huge generator have already proved beneficial to hundreds of people in St. Tammany parish and ignited the idea that led to the development and implementation of the St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund.

Our cities, parishes, states and nation are made strong and vibrant by its residents and we believe that each resident, whether life-long or new, is vital to the future of our community. Our neighbors need help over the next 6-12 months with medical care, employment, transportation, clothing, food and shelter.

Our goals are:

  1. Help meet our neighbor’s most basic needs by providing proper food, clothing and shelter for an extended period.

  2. Help our neighbors obtain employment by filling existing open jobs in the community and/or creation of new jobs.

  3. Provide our neighbors with quality, accessible medical care regardless of their ability to pay.

As we face this challenge of rebuilding our community, your support has strengthened our determination.

I thank you. We all thank you.
God Bless,

Dr. Rachael Murphy and the Staff of United Med Care have stepped forward to aid those in our community who need help the most. Thousands of people in St. Tammany parish lost everything. Many more people in the shelters are evacuees from New Orleans who may be in our community for months or permanently. All are in need. Thus we are forming a special fund dedicated to aiding our neighbors. It is called the St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund.

The St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund is dedicated to rebuilding our community by re-establishing its residents.

Our cities, parishes, states and nation are made strong and vibrant by its residents and we believe that each resident, whether new or old, is vital to the future of our community. But our neighbors need help over the next 6-12 months with medical care, employment, transportation, clothing, food and shelter.

We need resources from our neighbors in surrounding communities and states in order to achieve these goals. Resources needed include: money, supplies and volunteers. All of the resources donated to the Fund will be used to directly affect the lives of those in need. The St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund will be held at Resource Bank in Mandeville Louisiana.

Many of our neighbors have already graciously given to help meet the immediate needs of our community and we send our sincerest thanks. But the effects of this disaster will continue for many months to come.

If you would like to help your neighbor recover from this disaster, please consider making a one-time or monthly donation to the St. Tammany Parish Relief Fund. Dr. Murphy and the Staff of United Med Care live and work in St. Tammany parish and are dedicated to rebuilding our community.

Thank you for your courage, generosity and compassion in standing with us to overcome this challenge.

God Bless, and Take Care,
James Breazeale
